Circus Elephants Lose Again – But You Can Help Them
Wednesday, 24 February 2010 23:15

By now you have probably heard the bad news that the Animal Protection Institute (API), and other plaintiffs, lost their lawsuit against Feld Entertainment, Inc. which owns Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey Circus – but you might not know or understand exactly why.

The suit was brought by API and other animal protection groups (American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), the Animal Welfare Institute (AWI), and the Fund for Animals (Fund), along with a former Ringling employee.  The plaintiffs charged that Ringling violated the federal Endangered Species Act (ESA), which protects the federally listed Asian elephants used in Ringling’s circus shows, by chaining them for extended periods and hitting them with bullhooks (heavy, sharp, pointed instruments). These are common practices in the circus, as trial testimony clearly demonstrated (for more information, see  www.bornfreeusa.org and follow links to the Ringling Trial).

The balance point between horse and rider
Wednesday, 24 February 2010 23:11

There exists a balance point between horse and rider and when you achieve it, you are floating on air. As Sally Swift from Centered Riding fame often suggested, breathing and finding that center will make you a better rider, and she was right! Matching your center of gravity which hovers around your belly button and the horse’s, which is just behind the front shoulder, is key to achieving this point. So often in my treatment regime I am improving the bio-mechanics (how you and the horse move) so that the opportunity exists for you to center yourself with great ease.

The spine in both you and your horse acts like a main beam of your house, with all the muscles attached to it and all the nerves that control those muscles emanating from it. Think of these nerves as the main circuit breaker in your home, they determine muscle movement.  Contrary to popular belief,  muscles do not necessarily get strong because you exercise them and they do not necessarily heal if you rest them. Nerve activity from muscles to the spinal cord dictate how much nerve activity from the spinal cord to the muscle exists. This spinal cord-nerve electrical activity to muscle activity dictates muscle function (ie. strength and healing). In neurology we call this activity Frequency of Firing. So in simple terms the Frequency of Firing from muscle to spinal cord determines the Frequency of  Firing from spinal cord to muscle.

The passive-agressive BLM
Thursday, 28 January 2010 20:48

December 28th, just 3 frigid mornings after Christmas day, the US Bureau of Land Management (BLM) started capturing 2500+ wild horses in Calico Mountains Complex, Nevada. This branch of our Department of the Interior has been rounding up an unprecedented number of wild horses and shipping them to an uncertain future. BLM scientists say that the land can’t support the horses, so for now 35,000 horses have end up in taxpayer funded feed lots, long term holding areas, or up for adoption. It costs us millions. What’s the real deal?

I think it’s because the BLM is passive-aggressive, just like I was when I was a husband – the first time around… but I’m better now. Lemme ‘splain.

Alpacas in Duxbury
Thursday, 28 January 2010 20:47

Last year three Alpacas moved in with the Bulman family in Duxbury. They arrived at the Bulman’s around Mother’s Day and are adjusting well, according to the family.

The Alpacas have been noticed around town because they’re not the typical Duxbury Yellow Lab. Maura Bulman has loved Alpacas since she was a little girl and finally decided to try her luck with them. Everything is running smoothly so far.
